Sept. 07.03 @ 7:55 p.m. It was supposed to be a beginner course, where we meet up with the instructor and he takes us through the trails and teaches us the basics, but 6 of us (2 of my friends, 3 strangers) just happened to get the oh-so-vague directions wrong and wound up in the wrong parking lot that we were supposed to meet in. We waited around looking all puzzled for a while, then said 'fuck it' and decided to try the trails on our own. We didn't have much luck finding any trails at first, then we found some little ones before finally deciding to turn around and find some better ones. Well. My first big hill, I'm coasting down it at a pretty decent pace and, somehow, I managed to get my wheels caught between the little ridge separating the trail and the grass. Of course, I didn't really know what to do, so I tried to ease my way off it, and I think I might've accidentally tapped my front brake instead of my back...next thing you know, I'm flipping over my right handle bar, slamming my head on the ground and rolling to a stop. Oddly enough, my very first thought was "wow! these helmets really do work!" followed by "oh fuck, did I break anything?" followed by "holy shit! that was awesome...my first wipe out!!!" All the while, I had five wide-eyed people standing around me with varying looks of horror. I managed to come away relatively unscathed...just some minor road rash on my ankle and a red "raspberry" type mark on my forehead. Oh, and a wicked headache now. It was probably good that I got my first wipe out done and over with in the early stages of learning to ride trails, because at least now I won't have a false sense of security that it won't happen to me. Ha! I probably won't even cover the mark on my head with make-up tomorrow...I'm pretty damn proud of that sucker! (Okay, that's a lie, I'm so covering it up...but only because I'm a total girly-girl that way). We ended up being out for about 4hrs, including the bike ride home, all the way from Old Mill Station to Yonge/Eg., and covered 31km for the day. I'm surprisingly ache-free (wipe-out aside), given how long we were out for. And my brand spanking new Nike trail runners were fantastic today...got me up some pretty steep hills with relative ease when I couldn't get up them on my bike, and gave me no break-in pains or blisters. Why didn't I try this sooner?? My only concern with my head bashing the ground is that I also did it pretty hard last week at soccer (tripped in a huge hole on the field and a girl landed on me), so two blows to the head in one week can't be too healthy. I had to pass up on my ultimate frisbee playoff game after that blow, and now I have to pass up my hockey playoff game tomorrow because of this one, just to be on the safe side. Sonuva... That's my story...come back next week to hear the details of how I've most likely wiped out again. I'll try to make it more interesting. C.
